Breeding Soundness Exams

Before any breeding attempt, it’s important to know if your mare is physically and reproductively prepared. A breeding soundness exam evaluates the mare’s health, reproductive tract, and cycle status to determine her likelihood of conceiving and carrying a healthy pregnancy.

This exam typically includes:

A full physical exam and health review

Vaginal exam and speculum inspection

Palpation and ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries

Evaluation of any prior breeding or foaling history

Assessment of estrus (heat) status and cycle timing

Whether your mare is being bred for the first time or returning to the broodmare herd after time off, this exam provides clarity—and helps avoid costly frustration during breeding attempts.

Pregnancy Checks

Confirming a pregnancy early allows for proper planning and, if necessary, intervention. Using portable ultrasound, we can verify pregnancy as early as 14–16 days post-ovulation, with follow-up exams recommended to assess fetal development and check for twin pregnancies.

Routine pregnancy checks include:

Initial confirmation (Day 14–16)

Follow-up for fetal viability (Day 25–30)

Additional checks as needed for high-risk mares

Monitoring for complications or reabsorption

The ability to perform these checks on-site reduces stress for the mare and provides instant information to guide your next steps. Whether your mare was bred via natural cover or artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis is fast, safe, and highly informative.

Reproductive Consultations

No two mares—and no two breeding programs—are exactly alike. We provide reproductive consultations to help horse owners navigate everything from breeding timing to long-term fertility planning. These visits may include:

Cycle tracking and estrus detection

Recommendations for breeding method (natural cover, AI)

Nutrition and hormone management for breeding mares

Pre-breeding evaluations for high-value mares

Guidance for first-time breeders or performance mares returning to breeding

Many clients appreciate the calm, personalized approach offered by Rocky Branch Veterinary Services. Rather than one-size-fits-all advice, you’ll receive practical, horse-specific guidance based on real experience and honest discussion.

A Comfortable, On-Farm Experience

Bringing reproductive services to the farm helps mares stay relaxed and makes each exam or check more effective. Dr. Sheely takes care to move at the mare’s pace, minimizing stress while still gathering the information needed to move forward with confidence.

Our clients often say they value the clear communication during and after each appointment. Findings are explained in a straightforward way, with recommendations based on what’s best for the mare and the breeding plan—not on a checklist or sales pitch.

With high-quality portable ultrasound and careful handling, Rocky Branch Veterinary Services offers the kind of thoughtful, ethical veterinary care that helps breeding success feel a little less stressful—and a lot more rewarding.
